The hydraulic fluid tank is necessary for the system to work properly. It contains the hydraulic oil. It often holds the pump block on its walls, compensates for fluid level variations in the system and allows the oil to cool at the end of the cycle.
Don't be surprised by the capacity of a hydraulic tank. The capacity must be sufficient to allow optimum settling and de-aeration of the fluid. The overall capacity depends on the flow rate of the pump(s) for one minute of use and the type of fluid. The capacity for mineral oil will be three to four times the flow rate of the pumps and five to eight times for a mixture of water and glycol
