Operation of a hydraulic sequence valve

A sequence valve, also known as a sequence valve, is a component found in hydraulic circuits. What exactly is its role in the circuit? What is the purpose of a hydraulic sequence valve? This article takes a closer look at how a hydraulic sequence valve works.

VALVES

As we mentioned in the introduction to this article, the sequence valve is one of the parts that make up a hydraulic circuit. It is also known as a sequence valve. Hydraulic circuits transport fluids. These fluids circulate at varying speeds, and the pressure in the lines can vary. To ensure the safety of all installations, it is essential that this pressure is regulated. Industrial hydraulic circuits are therefore made up of solid parts that allow fluids to circulate correctly and safely. The sequence valve is just such a component.

Different types of valve

There are several types of valve, fulfilling different functions. Depending on the needs of the hydraulic circuit and the fluids in circulation, the use of a valve will vary. Here are a few examples of valves that can be found in a hydraulic circuit:

  • The directional control valve, which changes the direction of flow of a fluid in a circuit
  • The pressure control valve, which controls and adjusts the pressure of a fluid in the circuit.
  • The flow control valve, which controls and adjusts the flow of fluid in the hydraulic circuit.

Although these valves have different roles, what they have in common is that they regulate the circulation, pressure and flow of a fluid within a hydraulic circuit. But what about the hydraulic sequence valve?

Understanding the hydraulic sequence valve

The hydraulic sequence valve is a closed valve found inside a hydraulic circuit. Fitted in series in the hydraulic circuit, it is normally closed and allows fluid to circulate when the pressure upstream of the circuit becomes too high. The advantage of this type of valve is that a single pump can supply two separate hydraulic circuits. How is this achieved? By operating two cylinders in sequence, hence the name "sequence valve". When a certain calibration value is reached, the normally closed valve opens to power a second actuator. This first actuator is powered directly by the circuit's hydraulic pump. The second actuator is supplied when the opening pressure of the sequence valve is reached.

The role of the sequence valve in an entire hydraulic circuit is therefore to regulate pressure by alternating the use of two different cylinders. This technique allows rapid pressure regulation by keeping the fluid or fluids in the circuit in circulation.

How do you recognise a hydraulic sequence valve?

The sequence valve is a square or rectangular piece of metal with two inlets. There are several sizes, each adapted to the specific needs of the hydraulic circuit concerned. The pressure exerted by the fluid varies according to the nature of the fluid or the composition of the circuit. So it's important to get the right information so that you can buy the right part for the right size. Make sure it is compatible with the other parts in the circuit.
