What are the uses of hydropower?

When the term "hydraulics" is mentioned, most people immediately think of water. Yet hydraulics can be found in many different sectors: agricultural, industrial and public works. That's what we're going to talk about in this article: the different uses of hydraulics, and therefore its areas of application.

Hydraulics in the industrial sector

In the world of industry, hydraulic tools are highly prized. As their name suggests, these tools rely on hydraulic technology to operate. They include hydraulic pumps and hydraulic presses, renowned for their versatility. Adjustable, they can be adapted to all kinds of jobs. There are also hydraulic cylinders, which can be single-acting or double-acting. They are used to absorb and distribute loads.

Most of the time, hydraulic tools are used for heavy loads and large jobs.

Using hydraulic tools has some interesting advantages:

- Their components are well lubricated. With hydraulic technology, oil is used. By ensuring that each component is well lubricated, oil means that the tool is easy to maintain and requires very little servicing.

- These tools are efficient and effective.

- These tools are robust and durable.

Hydraulics in agriculture

Here's another use for hydraulics. Used in the agricultural sector, this technology has become essential to this field! One of its main advantages is that it provides additional features to equipment, making farmers' work easier. In agriculture, hydraulics are used in particular on tractors: on these machines, the hydraulic circuit can be "open centre" or "closed centre", depending on requirements.

Open centres are used more on tractors with low power (100 hp) and low flow rates (no more than 110 l/min). For higher flow rates and more powerful tractors, the 'closed centre' hydraulic circuit is used.

The use of hydraulics in agriculture offers the following advantages:

- Longevity: hydraulically-powered equipment can be used for a long time without any problems.

- Reliability and performance: hydraulic systems are efficient and rarely break down.

- Versatility: hydraulic systems in agriculture can be used for comfort and safety, for example.

Other hydraulic equipment

The use of hydraulic equipment is recommended for major works such as demolition and earthmoving. There are several types of hydraulic machine:

- Bulldozers

- Forklift trucks

- Concrete mixers

- Mechanical shovels

- Loaders

- etc.

On this type of machine, the hydraulic fluid is pumped to a number of mechanical components, such as cylinders and motors.

Using a hydraulic machine has considerable advantages. In particular, it can lift a great deal of weight and is extremely flexible in use. It is also more economical than mechanical or electrical systems.

On the other hand, the fluid transmitted is flammable. So there is a risk of fire.

So now you know which industries can use hydraulic technology. And for every sector of activity, hydraulics offers interesting advantages!
