Variable displacement radial piston pumps

A key piece of hydraulic equipment in many industries, the variable displacement pump piston engine offers flow and pressure flexibility, as well as increased energy efficiency. Although there are two piston mounting principles, axial and radial, variable displacement radial piston pumps are not well known on the market. In this article, we will explore in more detail how variable displacement radial piston pumps work, and the advantages they offer for hydraulic systems.

What is a variable displacement radial piston pump ?

A variable displacement radial piston pump is a hydraulic pump that uses a set of pistons arranged around a central rotor to generate hydraulic power. Unlike axial piston pumps, the pistons of these pumps move perpendicular to the axis of rotation, allowing the pump to produce a pulsating flow.

The variable displacement of the radial piston pump allows the flow rate to be regulated according to the needs of the system. Variable displacement is generally achieved by changing the position of the pistons in relation to the central rotor, or by changing the position of the oscillating plate that controls the movement of the pistons. This ability to adjust displacement allows the pump's flow rate to be optimised according to the needs of the system, resulting in greater energy efficiency and longer pump life.

How do variable displacement radial piston pumps work ?

Variable displacement radial piston pumps use pistons to positively displace a fluid. Variable displacement is adjusted to control fluid flow, while pressure is regulated according to system load.

To operate, the piston moves away from the centre of the pump, creating a vacuum in the suction chamber. This draws the fluid into the pump. The piston then moves towards the centre of the pump, compressing the fluid in the compression chamber and increasing the pressure of the fluid.

When the piston moves away from the centre of the pump again, the compressed fluid is ejected from the pump into the system. Finally, as the piston moves closer to the centre of the pump, the compression chamber is refilled by the sucked-in fluid, and the cycle starts again.

Variable displacement control allows the pump to be adapted easily and precisely to different flow requirements, which can make variable displacement radial piston pumps more efficient than fixed displacement pumps in some applications.

In addition, the ability of variable displacement radial piston pumps to deliver high working pressures makes them suitable for demanding industrial applications.

Variable displacement radial piston pumps stand out from fixed displacement or other types of pumps thanks to their unique characteristics.

- Flexible flow

The ability to adjust the displacement to suit the needs of the system allows the pump's flow rate to be optimised and the pump to be adapted to different situations. This can lead to more efficient use of energy and better overall performance.

- High working pressure

Variable displacement radial piston pumps are capable of delivering high working pressures, making them suitable for applications where pressure is an important factor, such as hydraulic systems in the construction industry.

- Low noise

Variable displacement radial piston pumps produce less noise than fixed displacement pumps, which can improve the working environment and reduce noise-related maintenance costs.

- Durability

Variable displacement radial piston pumps are often designed to be durable and wear resistant, which can lead to greater reliability and longer pump life.

- Low running costs

Variable displacement radial piston pumps can be more energy efficient than fixed displacement pumps, which can lead to a reduction in operating costs over the long term.

What are the applications for variable displacement radial piston pumps ?

Variable displacement radial piston pumps are used in a wide range of sectors and applications because of their advantages.

In agriculture, they are used in farm machinery for irrigation, pesticide spraying and fertiliser distribution. Precise flow control ensures even distribution of products, even over large areas.

Used in construction machinery to supply hydraulic fluid to various cylinders, hydraulic motors or accessories such as excavators, drills or crushers, variable displacement radial piston pumps can deliver high pressures, which is essential for lifting and transport applications.

These pumps are also used in mining for extracting, transporting and processing minerals. Variable displacement radial piston pumps are capable of delivering high pressures and precise flow control for applications such as mineral processing and hydraulic fluid distribution.

In wind turbines, variable displacement radial piston pumps are used to control the orientation of the blades. In solar power plants, variable displacement radial piston pumps are used to regulate the flow of a heat transfer fluid.
