Their operation, although fairly simple - pumping and releasing water according to energy needs - involves a series of mechanisms that need to be fine-tuned to ensure that everything runs smoothly. UNDERSTANDING A HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT

There are many components in a hydraulic circuit. Each plays a key role in ensuring the proper circulation of the fluid(s). These include the hydraulic pump(s), the loads, the cylinders, the pressure limiters and the hydraulic balancing valve. In short, everything that maintains pressure throughout the circuit. Pressure is a physical force that results in an exchange of momentum in a thermodynamic system, particularly within a solid element or a fluid. In the case of hydraulic pressure, we are talking about an external pressure exerted on one part of a confined fluid which is transmitted to all the other parts, without any loss. A constant pressure must be maintained so that the fluid continues to circulate. This is where each of the elements making up the circuit comes into play.

The concept of hydraulic coupling

The hydraulic coupling mechanism enables power to be transmitted, in this case between the circulation of a fluid which is then transformed into mechanical energy. It consists of connecting and linking the shaft of a hydraulic motor or power take-off to that of a hydraulic pump. This installation transforms the motor's mechanical energy into hydraulic energy via the pump. As it turns, the motor shaft drives the pump shaft via the coupling. The pump will then be able to send the fluid (water, for example) into the hydraulic circuit.

What are the advantages of the hydraulic coupling?

Among other things, this type of mechanism optimises hydraulic flow. What's more, it's important to perform the coupling correctly, because if this operation is carried out correctly, it will prevent wear and tear on the parts, and therefore repeated breakdowns. Remember that the flow and pressure in a hydraulic dam are very high. As a result, parts are subject to high stress. A good hydraulic coupling helps to preserve the whole system. Provided, of course, that it is also properly maintained.

The role of the hydraulic balancing valve

The hydraulic balancing valve is one of the components of the hydraulic circuit. It guarantees the correct circulation of a fluid, but also ensures the safety of the entire circuit in the event of a malfunction. This part is used to control the lowering of driving loads in the hydraulic circuit. They are positioned between the spool valves and the actuators. When these are flanged directly onto the cylinders, they protect the whole system by blocking movement in the event of a hose rupture.

Whatever the type of installation, from a small circuit to a huge hydraulic dam, it is important to carry out regular maintenance on all the parts. This will ensure that the system works properly and that everyone is safe. The parts used for hydraulic coupling should therefore be closely monitored, as should the various safeguards protecting the system from any malfunction.
