What is the purpose of the hydraulic lantern?

What is the purpose of the hydraulic lantern?

A hydraulic circuit is made up of a large number of mechanical parts, each playing a specific role. They all contribute to the proper circulation of the fluid in the circuit. They include hydraulic pumps, loads, cylinders, pressure limiters and the part we're particularly interested in today, the hydraulic lantern. All these components work together to maintain pressure throughout a circuit, and in some cases to optimise flow.

UNDERSTANDING PRESSURE AND FLOW

Pressure is a physical force that results in an exchange of momentum in a thermodynamic system, particularly within a solid or a fluid. In the case of hydraulic pressure, we are talking about an external pressure exerted on one part of a confined fluid which is transmitted to all the other parts, without any loss. A constant pressure must be maintained in order for the fluid to continue to circulate

The flow rate of a fluid is the volume of liquid water passing through a cross-section of the flow, per unit of time. In everyday life, this definition can also be applied to the flow rate of water in our pipes, for example. In all cases, the volume of water flowing through a given space is measured.

A well-oiled machine

To ensure that the entire circuit functions correctly, it is essential to choose the right mechanical components. It is therefore essential to take into account the pressure that will be applied throughout the circuit, as well as the flow rate of the fluid at the inlet and outlet. Each part must therefore play its part, and be properly calibrated and installed.

Today, we're taking a closer look at the so-called hydraulic lantern. What exactly is a hydraulic lantern? It's a conical metal part that forms part of the hydraulic coupling. It forms part of the mechanical assembly between an electric motor and a pump. Couplings are the mechanical means by which power is transmitted from the combustion or electric motor to the hydraulic pump. Thanks to their flexible design, they are able to compensate for angular and radial misalignments between the motor and the pump, and significantly reduce the noise generated by the shaft line. There are several types of lantern, some made of aluminium or cast iron, others of steel, depending on the needs of the circuit concerned. The lantern is used to transmit power from an engine to a hydraulic pump.

The role of the hydraulic cylinder

Most cylinders consist of a single rod. In some cases, this rod is connected to a piston which moves in a body also known as the barrel. The hydraulic distributor distributes oil, which enters the hydraulic cylinder through an orifice and generates a pressure that engages the piston. This mechanical action creates an extension or retraction movement. This oil pressure exerted on the piston or directly on the rod creates what is known as a developed force. In simple terms, the greater the pressure, the greater the cylinder's ability to push heavy loads.

Whatever the nature of the hydraulic installation, it is important to choose the right hydraulic jack or hydraulic lantern. Servicing and maintenance are also essential, to ensure that the whole structure functions properly.
