        In a system, hydraulic directional valves, also known as pre-actuators, control the direction of the fluid in the system. In essence, a spool valve has at least 2 positions. Depending on the position, selected manually, mechanically, hydraulically or electrically, the directional valve directs the power of the hydraulic fluid to the components responsible for the desired movement. This is achieved by acting on a spool whose movement to the right or left causes ports to communicate.
